Answer to question 1: The person who started the getting saved trip was a person--or any person--who looked around at life and realized it just wasn't enough.

BTW, I think you'll find that Biblical apologetics has moved on a bit since Schweitzer's day. He was living in the aftermath of an explosive event, the German school of Biblical criticism, and he may have been a little too caught up in it. The quote you give effectively dismisses the entire New Testament. I don't think you'll find many scholars today who would take such an extreme stance.
